Are Hexagon Lights Worth It for a Barber Shop? A Per-Chair Look

The short answer

Yes, for most barber shops. Per chair, a hexagon grid lights the face from the front and sides with softer shadows than a round high bay, and it stays even along the mirror line where spaced flat LED fixtures can leave gaps. A 5 Grid covers one chair, a 9 or 14 Grid two, a 17 Grid three and a Large 17 Grid four, about 14,500 to 20,500 lumens per chair.

In this guide

Round high bays, flat LED fixtures and hexagon grids can all make a barber shop bright. The real test is what each one does at the chair, where the client watches the cut in a mirror.

This guide is for owners planning a fit-out or a re-light. Station placement and color temperature have their own guides. We sell hexagon grids, so read this as a seller's comparison with the trade-offs left in, using kits from our professional barber lighting range.

Hexagon Grid vs Round High Bays vs Flat LED Fixtures

A round high bay, often sold as a UFO light, is a compact, high-output fixture built for warehouse and gym ceilings. A flat LED fixture usually sits in a drop ceiling, where the trade calls it a troffer, from trough plus coffer. Troffers date from the fluorescent era and are the most common fixture in offices, schools and hospitals. A hexagon grid is one connected fixture of LED tubes in a honeycomb pattern. Our team has spent over 13 years in the lighting industry, and we judge any fixture over a barber chair on five points, the five-point chair test.

Chair test Hexagon grid Round high bay Flat LED fixture
Shadows at the chair Light from many tubes, so each shadow is mostly filled in Hard shadows under the brow and chin when hung over the chair Softer, but placed by the ceiling grid, not the counter
Color accuracy CRI (color rendering index) above 90 on HEXLED tubes Check the spec sheet Check the spec sheet
Even light along the mirror line One grid runs past the end chairs Bright under each fixture, darker between Gaps where a station falls between fixtures
Looks in client photos An even pattern of lines A bright disc in the mirror An office ceiling
When a part fails One tube goes dark, the rest stay on That chair goes dim That area goes dim

Color is the one row the shape does not decide. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends a CRI of at least 80 indoors and calls 90 or higher excellent. Hold any fixture over a chair to above 90, where HEXLED tubes are rated.

Why Source Size Decides the Shadows

A grid does not win on raw brightness. Matched lumen for lumen, a high bay puts as much light into the room. The difference is where the light comes from.

A small source casts a hard-edged shadow, the dark core called the umbra. A wide source wraps light around the head, so more of each shadow becomes penumbra, the soft partial shadow. A high bay over the chair is a small source, and it draws a hard line under the brow and chin, right where a line-up or a beard edge is judged. A grid is a wide source that runs from over the counter back over the chair, so the face takes light from the front and both sides. Our barber station lighting setup guide shows where it should sit.

Glare, the discomfort a bright spot causes in the eye, comes from small fixtures far brighter than the ceiling around them, and a client can see a high bay twice, overhead and in the mirror. Each HEXLED tube spreads its light through a low-glare diffuser across a 180 degree beam. The reflection reads as lines, not a hot spot.

Cost Per Chair, Worked Out in Kits

Prices change, so they live on the product pages. The math works without them, because you buy a grid per row, not per chair. Count the chairs, pick the kit that spans them, then divide.

Chairs in the row Kit Grid length Length per chair Output per chair
1 5 Grid 7.9 ft 7.9 ft 15,840 to 17,280 lm
2 9 Grid 12.5 ft 6.3 ft 14,520 to 15,840 lm
2 14 Grid 13.1 ft 6.6 ft 18,810 to 20,520 lm
3 17 Grid 16.4 ft 5.5 ft 14,960 to 16,320 lm
4 Large 17 Grid 20.2 ft 5.1 ft 14,960 to 16,320 lm

We divided each kit's length and rated output, both from its product page, by the chairs it spans at the usual 5 to 6 ft between chair centers. Your own spacing will move the figures a little.

The light per chair holds at roughly 14,500 to 20,500 lumens, from a 5 Grid hexagon lighting kit over one chair to a 17 Grid over three, because the kit grows with the row. Your cost per chair is the kit price divided by its chairs. One of our Los Angeles barber shop customers runs a Large 17 Grid.

Narrow rooms take the shallower 8, 11 or 14 Line Grid, at roughly 10,400 to 13,300 lumens per chair, and facing rows each get their own grid. With separate fixtures, every one you add is another box to mount and connect. Whether the total is bright enough is covered in our barber shop color temperature guide, with the 50 to 100 foot-candles that the IES Lighting Handbook lists for barber shops.

What Holds Up Over Long Days

Heat wears LEDs down, and shop lights run long days. HEXLED tubes have an aluminum body that pulls heat away from the LEDs, and they are rated for 50,000+ hours and IP54, dust and splash resistant, which helps where fine hair gets everywhere. Every tube has its own driver, the small power supply that runs it. If one fails, the rest of the row stays lit, and replacement tubes come in 5-packs.

White kits carry a 4-year warranty for home use and 2 years for commercial use, and a barber shop counts as commercial. Smaller non-dimmable kits ship with a plug-in cord. Larger kits and all dimmable kits ship with hardwire cables, so have a licensed electrician connect those.

Rooms That Need a Different Plan

  • Tall ceilings. This is the usual case for high bays. A grid surface mounts up to about 13 ft and hangs on 3.3 ft or 9.8 ft suspension wires above that.
  • A drop ceiling of flat fixtures. Keep them over the waiting area, put the grid over the chairs, and match the color temperature.
  • A rented space. Ask the landlord before ordering a larger kit, since it needs an electrician.
  • One chair or an odd floor. One small kit can cover most of a single-chair room, and our team draws custom layouts for L-shaped floors.

Next Steps

So, are hexagon lights worth it for a barber shop? If the chairs sit in rows and the work is judged in a mirror, yes. Per chair, the grid lights the face instead of the crown and keeps the end chairs as bright as the middle.

  1. Count the chairs in each row and pick the kit from the table above.
  2. Order 6500K Daylight, the usual pick for a commercial shop, or 5000K Cool White for a slightly warmer room. The color is fixed after install.
  3. Divide the kit price by your chairs, then compare sizes in our bright barber lights collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are hexagon lights worth it for a barber shop with one or two chairs?

Yes. A 5 Grid covers one chair and a 9 or 14 Grid spans two, so a small shop gets about the same light per chair as a big one.

Are hexagon lights better than high bay lights for a barber shop?

For the chairs, usually yes. A high bay is one small, bright source that leaves hard shadows under the brow and chin, while a grid spreads its light across the counter and the chair.

How do I work out barbershop lighting cost per chair?

Divide the price of the kit that spans one row by the chairs in that row. The standard grids give roughly 14,500 to 20,500 lumens of fixture output per chair.

Do flat LED fixtures show skin tones as well as hexagon lights?

They can, if the spec sheet shows a CRI above 90, because color accuracy comes from the CRI, not the shape.

How long do hexagon lights last in a busy barber shop?

HEXLED tubes are rated for 50,000+ hours, and one failed tube leaves the rest lit. White kits carry a 2-year warranty for commercial use.
