Screws and suspension cables use the same mounting points on the honeycomb, so switching from one method to the other doesn’t change the layout you planned on paper.

There are also two ways to get the system up. You can assemble it on the floor and lift it into place, or install it tube by tube directly on the ceiling. Both work, as long as you confirm and mark the position on the ceiling first.

Before you mount: measure and mark

In recent layouts our HEXLED team drew for customers, the obstacles were ordinary ones. There was an attic access hatch in the middle of a garage ceiling, a garage door opener that had to sit in the center of the pattern, and a ceiling fan planned for each bay of a meeting space. Every one of them was solved on paper first.

1. Check the footprint. Each kit’s product page lists its system size. Leave a few inches of margin on every side, because tube lengths are nominal and the connectors add a little to the overall size once the system is assembled.
2. Map every obstacle. Garage door openers and rails, the door in its open position, ceiling fans, attic hatches, sprinkler heads and existing fixtures all need clearance.
3. Confirm the ceiling height. Up to about 13 ft, the system mounts flush. Higher than that, plan on suspension cables.
4. Test before it goes up. If you assemble on the floor, test the complete system before you mount it. Reseating a tube at floor level takes seconds. On a ladder, it takes much longer.

Flat drywall or wood ceilings up to about 13 ft

This is the setup you’ll use in most garages, home gyms and basements. Mark each mounting point on the ceiling, then fix the system in place with the plastic anchors and screws from the box, which include one set for every mounting point. A 14 Grid uses 22 of them and a 23 Grid uses 33. Once it’s up, the system sits under 1.6 in from the ceiling.

Drop ceilings with a metal grid

On a suspended ceiling, secure the system to the metal ceiling grid with zip ties instead of drilling through the tiles. Zip ties aren’t included, so pick up a pack before install day.

High ceilings, open trusses and exposed beams

Above about 13 ft, hang the system instead of mounting it flush. Our adjustable suspension kit, sold separately, uses steel cables in 3.3 ft and 9.8 ft (1 m and 3 m) lengths, and the cables attach at the same mounting points the screws would use. Plan on one cable per mounting point.

Every tube runs on its own driver, so one failed tube doesn’t take the rest of the system down. The other tubes keep working, and you swap only the one that failed.

If a tube stays dark, reseat it before you replace it. Disconnect it and reconnect it at the same angle shown in our installation guide, and never force it, because forcing a tube can bend the copper pins inside the connector.

To take a tube out, use the removal tool from the box. It’s built for the snap-lock latch between tube and connector.
