Use the shape-match rule, which pairs the kit's outline with the shape of the space. Long, low surfaces such as a bar back wall, the wall above a desk or a ceiling run over a long table suit the RGB 4 Line Grid, 4 Zigzag Grid or 3 Line Grid. Squarer spots such as the wall behind a streaming chair, a feature wall or the ceiling over a seating group suit the 3 Grid, 4 Cluster Grid or 5 Grid. Measure first, and place the kit where its plug-in adapter can reach an outlet.

Planning an RGB hexagon light layout starts with the surface, not the color. Each of the six kits in our hexagon RGB lighting system range has the same 17.5" (44 cm) tubes, the same 7 solid colors and 358 animated scenes, and a plug-in 12 V adapter, so the choice comes down to outline and size.
This guide is for anyone deciding where an RGB kit goes in a game room, home theater, bar, lounge or studio. It covers sizes and placement, not setup or work areas. RGB kits make their white by mixing red, green and blue, which the U.S. Department of Energy lists as one of three ways LEDs produce white light, and for work we recommend a white kit.

The Six RGB Kits by Size
These are the overall sizes listed on each product page, feet first. The last column applies the shape-match rule to common spots.
| Kit | Size (ft) | Size (m) | Footprint | Good first pick for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RGB 3 Grid | 5.6' × 5.6' | 1.7 m × 1.7 m | Compact, as tall as it is wide | The wall behind a streaming chair, beside a TV |
| RGB 3 Line Grid | 8.2' × 3.3' | 2.5 m × 1 m | Long and low | Above a gaming desk, a short back bar |
| RGB 4 Cluster Grid | 7.9' × 5.6' | 2.4 m × 1.7 m | Compact rectangle | A feature wall, the ceiling over a seating group |
| RGB 4 Line Grid | 11.2' × 3.9' | 3.4 m × 1.2 m | The longest outline | A full back bar wall, a ceiling run over a long table |
| RGB 4 Zigzag Grid | 10.5' × 4.3' | 3.2 m × 1.3 m | Long, with a zigzag edge | Above a TV on a tall wall, a studio accent wall |
| RGB 5 Grid | 8' × 5.6' | 2.4 m × 1.7 m | Compact rectangle | A gym or cycling studio wall, the ceiling over a lounge |
The 4 Cluster Grid and the 5 Grid take up almost the same space (7.9' × 5.6' against 8' × 5.6'), so pick between them by the look you like. Color never decides the size, since every kit has the same range.

Layout Ideas, Room by Room
Wikipedia's entry on accent lighting notes that some accent lights are a piece of art in their own right, and an RGB kit is that kind of light. Put it where people already look. Walls come up far more often than ceilings in the searches that bring people to our RGB kits, so most ideas below start on a wall. A mistake our team sees in RGB plans is a kit picked from photos before anyone measured the wall.
Gaming desk wall
The wall behind your monitor is the one you look at while you play, so a long, low kit fits there, above the desk and clear of the screen. The 3 Line Grid suits a single desk, and the 4 Line Grid spans a wider setup. If you stream, your camera sees the wall behind your chair, and a compact 3 Grid or 4 Cluster Grid centered behind your head is easier to keep in frame.
TV wall
Measure the TV as well as the wall. A kit half hidden behind the screen loses its shape, so offset it above the TV or to one side. On an 8 ft wall the space above a TV often runs out for a long kit, and a compact 3 Grid beside the screen fits better. On a taller wall, the 4 Zigzag Grid can run above it.
Bar back wall
Back bars are long and busy, with shelves, bottles and often a mirror. A long kit above the shelving keeps the color clear of the bottles, with the 4 Line Grid for a full-length bar and the 3 Line Grid for a shorter one. The kits are rated IP54, dust and splash resistant, for indoor use.
Ceiling over a lounge
On a ceiling, center the kit on the furniture, not the room. Over a seating group or a coffee table, a compact outline such as the 4 Cluster Grid or 5 Grid reads as one fixture. Over a long table or a row of booths, the 4 Line Grid follows the furniture.

Gym or cycling studio accent
Put the color on the wall people face while they train, such as the front wall of a cycling studio or the feature wall of a garage gym. The 5 Grid and the 4 Zigzag Grid read well from across a room. Keep the training floor on white light.
Wall, Ceiling or Hung on Wires
Every RGB kit can be mounted three ways.
- On a wall. The shape sits at eye level, where it reads best in game rooms, bars and studios.
- On a ceiling. Color spreads over the room, and the walls stay free for a TV, shelves or art.
- Hung on wires. Our suspension kit, the Ceiling Suspension Wire Kit with 3.3 ft and 9.8 ft cables, lets the kit float lower over a bar or a seating area.
Mounting steps are in our installation guide.
Measure First, Then Find the Outlet
Hexagons fit together three to a corner, and in 1999 mathematician Thomas Hales proved that this honeycomb pattern splits a flat surface into equal cells with the least total edge. For layout, the point is simpler. A kit's edge is a run of points rather than a straight line, so measure the clear space against the full size in the table, with a margin all around. Our team has spent over 13 years in the lighting industry, and the tape test below is still the quickest preview we know.
- Measure the surface. Width and height for a wall, length and width for a ceiling, in feet.
- Note what is in the way. A TV, shelves, a window, a fan, a vent or a swinging door.
- Compare with the table. Pick a kit that fits the clear space with room to spare.
- Tape the outline. Mark the kit's full width and height with painter's tape and look at it from the couch, the bar stools or the camera.
- Find the outlet. Every HEXLED RGB kit runs from an external 12 V adapter that plugs into a standard outlet, so place the kit where the adapter can reach one. No hardwiring, no electrician.
- Plan one outlet per kit. If two kits share a room, each one runs from its own adapter.
For a shape bigger than one kit, or true white and color in one system, our team designs custom layouts, including RGBW with a separate white channel, through Custom Hexagon Lights.
Next Steps
So, which RGB kit fits which room? By the shape-match rule, long, low surfaces take a Line kit or the 4 Zigzag Grid, and squarer walls and ceiling spots take the 3 Grid, 4 Cluster Grid or 5 Grid. Measure, tape the outline and find the outlet, then compare kits in the HEXLED RGB collection. If the room also needs bright white light for work, plan that first with our hexagon lights layout planning guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which RGB hexagon kit is the longest?
The RGB 4 Line Grid, at 11.2' × 3.9'. The 4 Zigzag Grid comes next at 10.5' × 4.3'.
Which RGB kit fits a small wall?
The two smallest outlines are the 3 Grid at 5.6' × 5.6' and the 3 Line Grid at 8.2' × 3.3'. The 3 Grid suits a narrow, tall space and the 3 Line Grid a wide, short one.
Which RGB kit works behind a gaming desk?
Above the monitor, a long, low 3 Line Grid stays clear of the screen. Behind your chair on camera, a compact 3 Grid or 4 Cluster Grid is easier to keep in frame.
Can RGB hexagon lights go on the ceiling?
Yes. Every kit can be mounted on a wall or a ceiling, or hung below the ceiling on the Ceiling Suspension Wire Kit with 3.3 ft and 9.8 ft cables.
Do RGB hexagon lights need an outlet nearby?
Yes. Each kit runs from a plug-in 12 V adapter, so place it within reach of a standard outlet. No hardwiring or electrician is needed.
