Choose the shape first, because the light quality is the same. HEXLED grid kits and white hexagon kits share one tube family and its specs, and their connectors set the shape. Pick hexagon for the honeycomb, finer size steps, a listed light output, or dimmable and RGB versions. Pick grid for straight-line frames, squares, diamonds or stars, mostly sized for big, open ceilings.
In this guide
Both of our ceiling systems are straight LED tubes that snap into connectors. Hexagon kits join them into a honeycomb, while our ceiling grid lights join them into frames, squares, diamonds and stars.
This guide is for anyone choosing between the two for a garage, shop, studio or showroom. Room sizing has its own ceiling grid light sizes guide, and installation is covered in how to install ceiling grid lights. We sell both, so the aim is fit, not a winner.

How Each System Looks on a Ceiling
A hexagon kit is a honeycomb of identical six-sided cells, one bold, repeating pattern. A grid kit is one fixed design in straight runs, where the Linear Frame nests 1, 2 or 3 rectangles, the Gridline is a square grid and the Diamond Grid is a diamond lattice, with or without a border. The stars are built from diamonds, and the Hex Core is a triangulated hexagon cluster.
There's geometry behind the look. Triangles, squares and hexagons are the only regular shapes that tile a flat surface on their own with no gaps, the three regular tilings. A honeycomb repeats the hexagon and the Gridline repeats the square, while the stars are single statement shapes.
Neither look is more correct, and liking one is reason enough to buy it. Our team has spent over 13 years in the lighting industry, and our advice is to pick the pattern you'd enjoy looking at every day, then check the practical points below.
What Stays the Same
A grid kit and a white hexagon kit use the same tubes, and both run on 100-240 V AC.
The U.S. Department of Energy's LED Basics page names two key parts of light quality, the color of the light, often given as a color temperature, and how true objects look under it, which the color rendering index (CRI) can measure. The two systems match on both.
- Color. 3000K, 4000K, 5000K or 6500K, chosen when you order and fixed after install.
- Light. CRI above 90, 110 to 120 lm/W (lumens per watt) and a 180 degree beam.
- Build. Aluminum housing, a low-glare polycarbonate diffuser and 3-pin grounded snap-lock connectors.
- Life. Rated for 50,000+ hours, and IP54 dust and splash resistant for indoor use.
- Repairs. Each tube has its own driver, the small power supply that runs its LEDs, so if one fails, the rest stay lit and you swap that tube.
- Warranty. White kits, our Geometric & Grid Ceiling Lights included, carry 4 years residential and 2 years commercial.
Same color temperature, same quality of light. What changes is where that light lands.

Where the Two Systems Differ
| Feature | Hexagon kits | Grid kits |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Six-sided cells | Frames, squares, diamonds, stars or a triangulated hexagon core |
| Range | Many honeycomb layouts in standard and Large sizes | 14 kits in five design families |
| Light output | Listed on each white kit's product page | Not published per kit, so ask our team |
| Dimmable | Yes, 30%, 60% and 100% on a standard wall switch | None on the site |
| RGB | Yes, for ambient color | None on the site |
The connectors matter most. Each system has its own, and they turn tubes from the same family into a honeycomb or a square, so a grid kit can't join or extend a hexagon layout. Our product FAQ also lists them as separate systems.
Brightness data matters next. White hexagon product pages list each kit's light output, so you can size against a target. Grid pages don't, so for a grid, send our team your room size for a layout check first.
How the Sizes Step Up
The table sorts both ranges by the long side of each kit's outer size (its full width and depth), with hexagon examples and all 14 grid kits.
| Long side | Hexagon kits | Grid kits |
|---|---|---|
| Under 11 ft | 3 Grid (8.2 x 3 ft), 11 Grid (10.8 x 7.9 ft) | Nova Mini, Nova Bloom and Titan Star, 3.7 to 9.2 ft long |
| 11 to 17 ft | 14 Grid (13.1 x 7.9 ft) | Linear Frame (1, 2 or 3 Frame), Gridline, Hex Core and Diamond Grid (16.4 x 8.2 ft), 15.7 to 16.4 ft long |
| Over 17 ft | 39 Grid (17.4 x 16.4 ft), Large 39 Grid (20 x 21.5 ft) | Radiant Star, Diamond Grid (19 x 19 ft), Gridline 80 Tile, Gridline 100 Tile and Diamond Grid with Border, 18.3 to 19.7 ft long |
So 11 of the 14 grid kits are 15.7 ft or longer, while the hexagon range fills small and mid sizes in finer steps. The renders above pair a 14 Grid with a Gridline. The 15.7 x 9.8 ft Gridline is the smallest square grid, and the Gridline 100 Tile takes that pattern to 19.7 x 19.7 ft.
Check the outline too. The Linear Frame, Gridline and Diamond Grid with Border run out to their edges, but the stars and the plain Diamond Grid don't fill their rectangle, and an unbordered honeycomb leaves its corners open. For hexagon kits matched to garage sizes and other spaces, see our hexagon lights layout planning guide.
Mounting and Power
Both systems go up the same way. The tubes snap into their connectors, and the kit mounts on a ceiling or wall, surface mounted up to about 13 ft or hung on 3.3 ft or 9.8 ft suspension wires above that.
Power works the same way on grid kits and white HEXLED hexagon kits. Smaller non-dimmable kits ship with a plug-in cord for a standard grounded outlet. Larger kits, which have more than one power input, and all dimmable kits ship with hardwire cables, so have a licensed electrician connect those.
Which One Fits Your Space
- Which shape do you want to look at? Honeycomb means hexagon. Frames, squares, diamonds or stars mean grid.
- Need dimming or color? Only hexagon kits come dimmable or RGB.
- How big is the open ceiling? Small rooms get more hexagon sizes. Big, open ceilings suit both.
| Space | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Home garage, everyday DIY | Either | Pick by look. We suggest 5000K. |
| Large open garage | One big grid or hexagon kit | The biggest kits of both types run about 20 ft on a side. 5000K at home, 6500K for a commercial garage. |
| Home gym | Hexagon | Fine size steps and a dimmable option. Usually 5000K. |
| Detailing shop, workshop or pro bay | Either | CRI above 90 on both. 6500K. |
| Studio, retail space or showroom | Grid | Straight lines read as architecture. 6500K for a showroom. |
| Barber shop or lounge | Either | A star as a feature, or a long honeycomb like the Large 17 Grid in one customer's Los Angeles barber shop. |

Next Steps
So, grid or hexagon? Pick the shape first, since the light quality matches, then let dimming, RGB, listed output and size steps settle any tie.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do grid kits and hexagon kits use the same tubes?
Yes. Grid kits and white hexagon kits use the same tubes, with the same specs. Only the connectors differ, and they set the shape.
Can a grid kit connect to a hexagon kit?
No. They're separate systems with different connectors, so they can't form one layout, though you can run one of each in separate zones.
Which is brighter, a grid kit or a hexagon kit?
Tube for tube they're the same, at 110 to 120 lm/W, so output depends on how much tube a kit has. White hexagon kit pages list each kit's output, and our team can check a grid layout.
Are there dimmable or RGB grid kits?
Not on our site. Dimmable versions, which step through 30%, 60% and 100% on a standard wall switch, and RGB versions come only as hexagon kits.
Are grid lights or hexagon lights better for a garage?
Both work. Choose hexagon for the honeycomb, finer sizes or dimming, and grid for straight lines across a big, open ceiling. We suggest 5000K for a home garage and 6500K for a commercial garage or showroom.
