A ceiling grid lighting system is a set of straight LED tubes joined by connectors into one fixed design, such as nested frames, a square grid, a diamond lattice or a star, that mounts on the ceiling as one lighting system. In offices, the phrase often means troffers set into a drop ceiling instead. HEXLED grid kits come in five design families, from 3.7 x 3.2 ft to 19.7 x 19.7 ft, and suit garages, workshops, detailing shops, studios and retail spaces.

Picture a dark garage ceiling crossed by bright, clean lines in frames, squares or diamonds. That is a ceiling grid lighting system. This guide explains how our ceiling grid lights work and where each design fits.
It is for homeowners and shop owners who have seen these grids in photos. It covers the designs, shared specs, comparisons with single fixtures and hexagon kits, and where it fits. For sizing, see our ceiling grid light sizes guide, and for the install, read how to install ceiling grid lights.

What a Ceiling Grid Lighting System Is
A ceiling grid lighting system is one light built from many straight LED tubes. Connectors join the tube ends at fixed angles that set the shape. On our site the line is called Geometric & Grid Ceiling Lights, with 14 kits across five designs.
Not the lights in a drop ceiling. In offices and schools, the phrase often means troffers, rectangular fixtures that sit in the 2 x 2 ft or 2 x 4 ft openings of a suspended ceiling grid. Troffers were long built around fluorescent tubes and now often use LEDs. So the phrase covers two different ideas, lights that sit in a ceiling grid and lights that form the grid themselves.
Five Grid Ceiling Light Designs
Outer size is the width and depth of the whole design. It shows how much ceiling a kit spans, not how much of it is lit, since star and diamond designs don't fill their outer rectangle. The Titan Star, for example, spans 9.2 x 7.9 ft, but its points leave the corners open. So don't pick between designs on outer size alone.
| Design | What you see | Kits and outer size |
|---|---|---|
| Linear Frame | One to three nested rectangles | 1 Frame, 2 Frame and 3 Frame, all 15.7 x 7.9 ft |
| Gridline | A square grid | Gridline 15.7 x 9.8 ft, Gridline 80 Tile 15.7 x 19.7 ft, Gridline 100 Tile 19.7 x 19.7 ft |
| Diamond Grid | A diamond lattice, with or without a border | Diamond Grid 16.4 x 8.2 ft or 19 x 19 ft, Diamond Grid with Border 19.7 x 19.7 ft |
| Star designs | Stars built from diamonds | Nova Mini 3.7 x 3.2 ft, Nova Bloom 5.4 x 3.2 ft, Titan Star 9.2 x 7.9 ft, Radiant Star 18.3 x 8 ft |
| Hex Core | Triangles grouped into a hexagon cluster | 15.85 x 9.25 ft |
Linear Frame and Gridline give clean, architectural lines, as in the Gridline 100 Tile. Diamond Grid and Hex Core read as pattern, and a star reads as one centerpiece. Despite the name, Hex Core is a grid kit, not one of our hexagon kits.
What Every Kit Shares
Whatever the shape, every HEXLED grid kit shares these specs.
- Housing. Aluminum, with a low-glare polycarbonate diffuser.
- Color accuracy. CRI above 90. CRI, the color rendering index, measures how true colors look, and the U.S. Department of Energy's LED Basics page calls 90 or higher excellent, with 80 the recommended minimum for interior lighting.
- Efficacy. 110 to 120 lm/W, the lumens of light per watt of power.
- Rated life. 50,000+ hours.
- Connectors. Grounded 3-pin connectors with snap-lock assembly.
- Protection. IP54, dust and splash resistant, for indoor use.
- Drivers. Each tube has its own driver, the small power supply that runs its LEDs, so if one fails, the rest stay on and you swap that tube.
- Color temperature. 3000K, 4000K, 5000K or 6500K, chosen when you order and fixed after install.
- Warranty. 4 years residential, 2 years commercial.
Grid kits are white light only, with no dimmable or RGB versions. We recommend 5000K for a home garage and 6500K for workshops, detailing shops and showrooms. Brightness isn't published per grid kit, so if that decides it, read how many lumens a garage needs and ask our team to check a layout.
A Grid System vs Single Fixtures
Most rooms are lit by single fixtures, such as shop lights, a flush mount or recessed cans. Each is a separate light in its own spot, with unlit ceiling in between. A grid kit is one connected system, so light comes from many lines spread across the design instead of a few points, which helps reduce harsh shadows.
| Question | Single fixtures | Ceiling grid system |
|---|---|---|
| What you see | Separate lights, unlit ceiling between | One connected design across the ceiling |
| Where light comes from | A few points or short lines | Many lines across the design |
| If one light fails | That area goes darker | The rest stays on |
| Best fit | Light for one small spot | Even light and a finished-looking ceiling |
Looks alone are a fair reason to choose a grid, even for a garage you mostly park in.
Grid Kits and Hexagon Kits
Grid kits use the same tubes as our hexagon kits, with the same specs. What differs is the connectors, and they create the shapes. Can a grid kit extend a hexagon kit you already have? No. The two don't connect, so plan separate layouts if you want both looks in one room. We compare the two looks side by side in grid vs hexagon ceiling lights.
Where a Grid System Fits
Our product descriptions name workshops, studios, professional bays, retail spaces, detailing shops and home garages that want a distinctive look. Our team has spent over 13 years in the lighting industry, and these are the starting points we suggest.
- Garages and car collections. Linear Frame or Gridline for clean lines over the cars, or a star as a centerpiece.
- Workshops, bays and detailing shops. Gridline or Diamond Grid, so lines of light run across the whole work area.
- Barber shops, studios and retail spaces. Diamond Grid, Hex Core or a star as a statement piece.

Power and Mounting
Smaller grid kits ship with a plug-in cord for a standard grounded outlet. Larger kits ship with hardwire cables and more than one power input, so have a licensed electrician connect those and handle any old fixture wires. Kits mount on a ceiling or a wall, and on ceilings up to about 13 ft they surface mount, while higher ceilings use suspension wires in 3.3 ft or 9.8 ft lengths.
Next Steps
So, a ceiling grid lighting system is one connected design of LED tubes that lights the room and finishes the ceiling. To narrow the 14 kits down, run the look, span and power check.
- Look, before you shop. Pick the family by the lines you want to see, from clean frames to a single star.
- Span, before you order. Check the outer size against the open ceiling, and in a garage start with the door opener rail, since it often runs where a kit would go.
- Power, before install day. Check plug-in versus hardwire, and whether a ceiling above about 13 ft needs suspension wires.
Then compare all 14 kits in our geometric LED ceiling lights collection. If none of them fits your ceiling, or you want a brightness check first, our team can draw a layout through our Custom Hexagon Lights page.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a ceiling grid lighting system?
It is a set of straight LED tubes joined by connectors into one fixed design, such as frames or a star, mounted on a ceiling or wall as one lighting system.
Is a ceiling grid light the same as a drop ceiling troffer?
No. A troffer is one rectangular fixture set into a suspended ceiling grid, while in a ceiling grid lighting system the lit tubes form the grid themselves.
Can a grid kit connect to a hexagon kit?
No. They share a tube family, but the connectors differ and the two are separate systems that don't connect.
Are grid kits dimmable or RGB?
No. Grid kits are white only, in 3000K, 4000K, 5000K or 6500K, chosen when you order and fixed after install. Dimmable and RGB kits are part of our hexagon range.
Do I need an electrician for a grid kit?
Smaller kits plug into a standard grounded outlet. Larger kits ship with hardwire cables and more than one power input, so a licensed electrician should connect them.
